Protecting Youth in the Context of Marijuana Legalization
Youth marijuana use is associated with risks such as poor academic performance, risky behaviors, and mental health challenges, especially as the brain is still developing during adolescence. Increased legalization and accessibility may contribute to greater use among youth by potentially normalizing it and reducing perceived risks. Adopting prevention efforts is crucial to addressing these evolving challenges and protecting young people’s well-being.

Neighborhood poverty and family economic hardship strongly affect child well-being and risk for neglect. While low income alone doesn’t always predict neglect or abuse, parental stress, burnout, and poor mental health—common in financially struggling families—are key factors. With 83% of CPS-investigated families earning below 200% of the poverty line, providing economic supports could help prevent maltreatment and reduce child welfare involvement.
