Neighborhood poverty and family economic hardship strongly affect child well-being and risk for neglect. While low income alone doesn’t always predict neglect or abuse, parental stress, burnout, and poor mental health—common in financially struggling families—are key factors. With 83% of CPS-investigated families earning below 200% of the poverty line, providing economic supports could help prevent maltreatment and reduce child welfare involvement.
